The Stranger review: Existential tale is a timely take on the banality of atrocity

Fans of the cold monochrome ­elegance of Netflix’s Ripley should seek out this retelling of Albert Camus’s The Outsider (or The Stranger, to give it its ham-fisted US translation). Gallic maestro Francois Ozon brings some of the sun-seared decadence of Swimming Pool (2003), but stays faithful to the 1942 existential classic.
