It was while driving up Magnolia Lane last year that Rory McIlroy suffered an acute pang of status anxiety. Seeing all the past Masters champions assembled on the clubhouse balcony, enjoying their sundowners before dinner, his first instinct was to hide, to run from any reminder of the prize that seemed forever to elude him.
