There are cars you admire, cars you endure, and then there are cars that consume you. The Land Rover Defender belonged firmly in the last camp; unglamorous, uncomfortable and thirsty, with the turning circle of a small town and yet somehow utterly irresistible. You didn’t so much drive a Defender as surrender to it.
