When the American sociologist Robert K Merton wrote his seminal essay on the law of unintended consequences in 1936, even he would have thought it a stretch that a waterway dispute in the Gulf would cause a ripple effect to a political dynasty in a remote corner of Ireland called Kilgarvan, Co Kerry, nearly 5,000km away.
