Dermot Crowe: Critical Clareman who crossed great divide of the Shannon

In the match programme for the 1986 Munster senior hurling final there is a photograph brilliantly capturing the ferocity and wildness of the game. Taken from the semi-final between Clare and Tipperary in Ennis, it shows Alan Cunningham contesting an aerial ball with Tipperary’s John McGrath. Cunningham’s hurl has wrapped itself around McGrath’s ribs, bent into a surreal shape on impact.
