A few weeks ago on social media, I spotted a strange upsurge in enthusiasm for Charles de Gaulle — a few likes and retweets anyway, for a post describing the late French leader’s frugality when it came to spending public money. He was said to be the same way with his own money, but there was still something deeply impressive about the general’s insistence that no personal expense would ever be paid for by the state.
