Dear Vicki: Why have ‘staff’ and ‘employees’ suddenly become ‘colleagues’, but without extra pay?

Q: I see that the word “colleagues” has now virtually replaced “workers”, “staff” and “employees” in companies, even though there was nothing wrong with any of those terms. To me, it smacks of HR departments taking over the show, enforcing their bland culture on everyone else.
