On May 3, 110 years ago, Patrick Pearse, ­Thomas MacDonagh and Tom Clarke were executed by firing squad. It marked the beginning of the most consequential phase of the Easter Rising, when the response of the authorities did more to shape Ireland’s future than the ­Rising itself.
